At our May 2012 club meeting, George Carlson, KC5RCC, demonstrated near field antenna patterns using his desktop demonstrator. The desktop demonstrator is a 3-GHz signal source and a simple receiver built into a standard chassis box. George also brought a collection of many popular antenna types scaled to 3 GHz.

Build an inexpensive dipole for 2m and 70 cm. This antenna works best if mounted as high as possible. Optimum height is in the 22 ft to 25 ft range. This antenna will work virtually any 2m repeater in the metro Houston area. It performs well on 70cm as well.
The basic antenna, minus feed line and support, costs around $10. If you have some or all of the parts on hand, the cost is even less. Stick to the plan, tune carefully, and you will have an antenna that works better than any purchased equivalent for 1/20th the cost.
